TAKO, which stands for UMUTAKO, meaning décor, is a fashion company that promotes tourism and supports young girls to become independent. Founded by UWASE Chance, TAKO’s mission is to showcase Rwanda’s beauty, culture, and identity through fashion.
One of the unique aspects of TAKO is their use of recycled clothing materials to make their products. They take clothes people no longer use and turn them into T-shirts, sandals, and even Kimonos. By doing this, they promote sustainability and empower the people they work with to make a living.
For instance, TAKO uses recycled male jeans to make beautiful bags that promote tourism in Rwanda. They also have T-shirts with different designs, such as giraffes, boats, and birds. These products are available at Kunda Art Gallery or on Rwandamart.
Besides promoting tourism through fashion, TAKO’s other purpose is to help young girls become independent. TAKO aims to empower young women to make their own way in the world by providing employment opportunities.
